The Last Few Weeks
It has been a very busy few weeks in the world of fetish with some huge events attracting a lot of attention. Club Rub held a Cowboys, Indian and Mexican Day of the Dead themed Birthday party to celebrate reaching the grand old age of 14 on April 16th 2011. Hundreds of people attended clad in day of the dead face paint, hats, and of course leather chaps. Rub also hosted a Pirates and Wenches night on March 19th with pirate names, pirate flags, bracelets, tattoos, and pirate costumes. It was a fantastic chance to dress up and you guys didn’t disappoint! There were so many sexy Pirates and Wenches that I almost didn’t miss the presence of Johnny Depp. Almost. It was great to see so many regulars and new faces at both of the Club Rub nights, hope to see all you newbies again soon!
Also celebrating a Birthday this month was Torture Garden which was 20 years old. TG held a weekend long series of events starting with the Opening Event on 6th May at Mass St Matthew’s Church in Brixton, followed by the TG Birthday Ball on the 7th at Coronet. The Closing party on the 8th was hosted on board the HMS President and had a military/uniform theme – very sexy! The weekend was a messy one. The dungeons and cinema were particularly well done. The music on the night was fantastic with Mike Koglin’s set a highlight of the weekend.
Of course, we can’t forget ‘Six of the Best’ which was held on 30th April at Romford Factory by The Firm – an amazing night with a school theme. I think a lot of people had trouble sitting for at least a week after ‘Six’.
In the coming weeks events include Dappers and Dandies Night at Club Subversion on 4th June, The Boat on 2nd July departing from Temple Pier and Medieval Fate on 23rd July at The Factory. (Tickets are available from the clubs with the exception of The Boat for which tickets can be purchased from Zeitgeist on Holloway Road)

This Summer’s Biggest Fetish Events Of 2011

Taking place on Saturday 2nd July the boat will be departing from Temple Pier. If you haven’t experienced cruising down the Thames at night on a boat full of people enacting their favourite fantasies before, then you are really missing out. See the sights of London in the only way you should; being served drinks and canapés by very attentive maids whilst engaging in a little S&M. Tickets cost £25 in advance from Zeitgeist on Holloway Road or you can buy them at dockside on the night for a higher rate. Remember that this event only happens once a year, so don’t miss out.
The Facility – 29th May
If you are in the Birmingham area on 29th May between 2pm and 10pm then check out the launch of ‘The Facility’ who are having a relaxed daytime play party in the North of the city to show off their new dungeon and fetish rooms including a Rubber Room with bondage bed, Spanking benches and a rack. Midsummer Night Fantasies Masked Ball – 18th June

Punk Clothing
The history of punk sub culture and clothing
When looking back at the chain of events it is easy to see why alternative punk clothing is now a popular style of fashion.
In the 70′s and 80′s, punk music and art influenced a whole urban punk sub culture, emerging initially in 3 major cities, New York, London and Los Angeles. Boston and Brisbane also had similar scenes emerging around the same time. In the late 70′s, sub-divisions of punk began to develop such as pop-punk and new wave punk and later also hardcore punk and street punk became popular streams of this subculture.
The influence of music on punk subculture
Music had a clear part to play in the origination of this new following, with punk bands such as The Sex Pistols coming onto the scene. The lyrics of many punk songs expressed punk values which include animal rights, environmentalism, anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-sexism and socialism; most punk and alternative followers are considered left-wing when it comes to politics.
Punk clothing
The style of dress in the 70′s punk scene was very much “alternative” from the mainstream fashion of the time and often considered rebellious and controversial. Items such as tapered or drain-pipe jeans, ripped T-shirts held together by safety pins, and worn out leather jackets were typical alternative clothes usually accompanied with equally dynamic footwear such as Dr Martins, baseball boots or biker boots with heavy steel toecaps and prominant metal buckles. Interesting hair styles such as mohawks were common as well as tattoos and body piercings. Often slogans expressing their own or typical punk values were hand drawn onto T-shirts with felt tips or paint and general houshold items were often introduced into an outfit, binliners made into dresses or razor blades used as jewelery, for example.
PVC Clothes, Latex, Rubber and Leather were all popular fabrics to wear due to the association with sexual practices like bondage and S&M, again often not viewed as “main-stream”. This part of punk fashion has remained consistant into modern day punk and alternative clothing.
Modern day alternative subculture encompasses punk styles as well as gothic clothing and emo. It generally represents a following of individuals who want to be able to express themselves and not have to dress, act or think like everyone else.
T-shirts can now be bought with slogans printed on them so the felt tips and paint trend has mostly subsided but modern day punks still manage to be creative in their choice of combined fabrics, different punk style clothing and artistic approach to dress.

Gothic PVC Clothing
Where did Gothic Fashion Originate?
The word “gothic” has been used in history and still today to descibe many things including architecture, art and literature as well as more recently, fashion. This can be related back in history to the original “goths” who were an Eastern Germanic tribe who played a part in the fall of the Roman Empire. During the Renaissance period, following the fall of Rome, medieval architecture was often referred to as “gothic” as it was not in keeping with the classical style of the time. In later years people became overcome with nostalgia for the gothic period and the fascination with gothic ruins turned into a shared fascination with the supernatural, Roman Catholic religion and everything dark and mysterious.
Literature and cinema over the years has developed the gothic sub culture, with books and films depicting scenes with graves, ghosts, vampires, curses, castles and ruins, with the main characters typically being femme fatales, vampires and beasts.
Gothic subculture is also linked with erotism and sexuality, which is represented in the style of gothic fashion.
Gothic fashion today
Gothic clothing is a popular style of fashion amongst people of all ages, but particularly young people.
The typical gothic “get-up” consists of mainly black clothes including items such as tight fitting trousers, long black coats or gowns, corsets and chokers as well as fetish clothing, often combining fabrics such as PVC, velvet, latex, fishnet and leather. This accompanied with black buckled shoes or boots as well as black dyed hair, black painted nails and / or heavy black eyeliner. Crucifixes and similar icons are also used in gothic fashion representing the connection to the Roman Catholic church. Piercings are often popular as is silver and pewter jewellery. This sterotypical gothic look is often referred to as the “romantic goth.
Similar to the romantic goth is a style referred to as “lolita goth”, which originated in Japan. Here black is often combined with white and many styles borrow ideas from Medieval, Victorian and Elizabethan period dress, for example ruffled shirts with high necks, items trimmed with lace or ribbons and outfits are often accessorised with parasols, lace headresses or top hats.
More recently, gothic fashion has added an array of bright colours as a contrast to the “just black” look so this new stream of so called “cyber-goths” are moving gothic fashion into a new era! Black items are now being combined with neon, wild colourful hair extensions, bright makeup and futuristic accessories such as googles.
Gothic culture and fashion is ultimately about being able to express yourself and be imaginative and unique in showing people the real you. Unlike mainstream fashion that depicts all women must be slim and all men muscular, gothic fashion aims to allow individuality to shine through and be accepted.

What is PVC?
The technical name for PVC is “polyvinyl chloride” and this product is most commonly used in the building and chemical industries. However, by adding another product called a “placticizer”, PVC can be made softer and more flexible and becomes ideal for clothes and upholstery.
